The pleat that you just created will be 1/2 inch deep. I’ll use my height & bodyweight to guess. The mask should now be 3” to 3.5” high (i prefer 3”).

That’s about 25.5cm x 16.5cm.


This will be your pattern/template. The stripes will help you avoid shifting or misplaced pleats. Next, 0nce the pleats and ridges are made, create the side channels by pressing a very small hem in towards the mask.

Fold excess fabric on each end over to the other side of the mask and press/pin in place.

Pleats work best when you are working with sturdy fabrics, such as wool, cotton, and silk.


You will fold the jig on each of these lines. The next pattern will be similar to this design, but it will have 3 layers and cut from. You can easily make basic pleats by measuring and marking your fabric, folding the fabric, and then sewing to secure the pleats.

Make sure the side channels are wide enough for a safety pin to go through.


Stitch very close to the mask side of the channel, and thread the elastic onto a safety pin and push through the channel. The simple surgical style 3 pleats face mask is made of 2 layers of fabric (not including interfacing, if it is used). Starting from the bottom of the jig, the first fold is 1 3/4″, the second is 1 3/4″ above this, and the third is 1 1/2″ above this.
